Self Portrait –David Whyte (‘Fire in the Earth’)

It doesn’t interest me if there is one God
or many gods.
I want to know if you belong
or feel abandoned.
If you know despair
or can see it in others.
I want to know if you are prepared
to live in the world with its harsh need to change you
If you can look back with firm eyes
saying this is where I stand
I want to know if you know how
to melt into that fierce heat of living
falling towards the center of your longing
I want to know if you are willing to live
day by day, with the consequence of love
And the bitter unwanted passion of your sure defeat.
I have heard, in that fierce embrace,
Even the gods speak of God.

Tao Te Ching -Lao Tzu

“Those who know do not speak.
Those who speak do not know.”

“Knowing others is intelligence;
Knowing yourself is true wisdom.
Mastering others is strength;
Mastering yourself is true power.”

“Simplicity, patience, compassion.
These three are your greatest treasures.
Simple in actions and thoughts,
you return to the source of being.
Patient with both friends and enemies,
you accord with the way things are.
Compassionate toward yourself,
you reconcile all beings in the world.”

“When you are content to be simply yourself
And do not compare or compete,
Everyone will respect you.”

Put your feet on the earth
Let gravity pull you into it
Letting you stand gently,
yet firmly on the cold earth soil.

Listen to the truth of your inner being.
It is the wisest form of your human existence
When all else fails and feels like it is crumbling around you
Who or what can you trust?

You can trust yourself of all things.
Not to say “errors” won’t happen,
but even that you can trust
is all part of your journey in this lifetime

Things will always work out,
Whether you know about it or not.
